  • The 'thousand-li horse' was a fabled horse (or type of horse) which was supposedly capable of galloping one thousand li (approximately 400 km) a day. Bo Le, a famous judge of horses during the Spring and Autumn period, was supposedly capable of picking out the (or a) thousand-li horse from a herd. This has now become a metaphor for the ability of a wise ruler to select gifted scholar-officials.
